Bacon-wrapped green beans are one of the most popular ways to serve green beans at German restaurants. Before I found this recipe I tried to make them in several ways. It turned out that the easiest and quickest way to make them is by using a frying pan. With frying – your bacon will always remain crispy and the beans soak some of the bacon fat from the pan when turning. And trust me – that’s what you want.

I love making this particular dish because is so straightforward and fancy at the same time. You just need two ingredients, that you probably already have in your fridge or freezer and a frying pan. If you want to make it ahead of time, you just need to cook the beans and make the bundles and fry them just before serving the dinner.

Ingredients & Substitutes

Green Beans – for this recipe I am using thin, frozen green beans, but you can go ahead and use fresh ones. If you don’t have green beans this recipe also works wonderfully with green asparagus or wax beans

Bacon – I am using very thin slices of bacon, called Frühstücksspeck here in Germany

Tips

  • You can make the dish ahead of time – just cook the beans, make the bundles and store them in an airtight container until you are ready to fry them in a pan right before serving your meal
  • For frying, you don’t need to use any additional fat
  • In this recipe you also don’t need anything to secure the bundle –the trick is to place the bundles in a pan with the side where the bacon slice ends down

Storage & Reheating

fridge 3

Green bean bundles that haven’t been fried – store in the fridge in an airtight container for 24h.

Green bean bundles that have been fried – store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

reheat

The best way to reheat green bean bundles is to put them in the preheated oven to 120ºC (250ºF) for 25-30 minutes. This way the will remain juicy.

FAQ

Yes! You can make the bundles ahead of time and then leave the last step (frying) until you are ready to serve them.

First, you need to cook green beans, then wrap a slice of bacon around them and fry them in a frying pan.

The best way to reheat green bean bundles is to put them into a preheated oven (120ºC or 250ºF) and let the reheat very slowly. That should take around 15 minutes.
